A Systemic Approach The Online Internet Institute sprung from the vision of two classroom teachers, Ferdi Serim and Bonnie Bracey, who recognized the need for professional development activities which would help other teachers become part of the Internet community. Their vision has expanded to a national collaborative structure which provides far more than simple skills training. OII feels infusion of technology into the curriculum is best implemented in an environment where students are engaged in purposeful, meaningful projects that are curriculum-based and utilize technology as a tool in pursuit of curricular objectives. Though OII professional development may be presented and is useful in any setting, a class, school, or district should be striving to develop an appropriate educational structure to best implement the OII process. An outstanding systemic approach to successful technology implementation has been developed by Bernajean Porter, a Thornberg Center associate. OII has incorporated these theories and offers this quick overview of the district process of technology implementation. Any district moving toward this goal will have people at different stages of development. OII can assist in technology planning, restructuring, and teacher professional development within the context of this model. The OII professional development process includes the paradox of building individual skills of lifelong learning through the practice of online collaboration with colleagues, experts, and mentors. These collaborations allow the OII to provide planning, staff development workshops, and online support built around the Four Directions for Lifelong Learning and other proven processes, such as Tom March's Working the Web for Education, Mike Eisenberg and Bob Berkowitz's Big6 Problem Solving Method, and Six Trait Writing. September of 2002, OII began piloting a new and powerful way to enhance any writing program. OII's 3DWriting program and unique 3DWriter software allows schools to implement a technology-enhanced writing program, that is data driven. The software is free and available from 3DWriting.com. In 1995, OII began as a funded online project to investigate how professional development could be done effectively and efficiently. It found that the most effective model as face-to-face professional development with ongoing support, both locally and online. Now ten years later, OII is returning to its roots and offering a new group of online workshop to compliment their face-to-face offerings. OII workshops provide a path for professional growth and a skill set to create quality Web-based activities regarless of where teachers are on the professional development continuum. By providing a range of activities within a common setting, OII is able to help you move from where you are to where you want to go. If your district is in the process of moving toward student-centered classrooms or if you would like to know more about the process of systemic reform and the infusion of technology across the curriculum, OII can assist you in your efforts.
