Filtering and OII

OII is made up of a diverse group of individuals with an equally diverse range of opinions on many issues. Filtering is just one of those issues.  As an organization, OII neither endorses nor condemns filtering.  However there are some things on which we all agree.

In a perfect world, filters would not exist..

The best filter lies between the ears of each student.

Whether or not a school decides to filter, it is the job of every educator to teach students how to be information literate citizens and to deal with all kinds of information.

Filtering ought to be a local issue to be determined by individual schools, libraries, and communities.

The government has a responsibility to pursue protections which are constitutional, enforceable and technically possible, rather than mandate solutions which can't work.

The public has a responsibility to demand protections which are constitutional, enforceable and technically possible, rather than accept solutions which can't work

Education, not legislation, is the best course of action.
