Let's look at what might
transpire in a school and how it relates to CIPA and the Internet Safety Policy. If you read the previous two messages on this topic, you might have become more literate about mouse trapping, porn-napping, and web squatting. Many others are not so literate. What might be the consequences of lacking that knowledge?
What if a teacher sees a student closing one porn site after another? How might their reaction to that be colored by knowledge of lack of knowledge of how these sites work?
If a student
got their mouse trapped at the 21CT site yesterday, it was because they violated the AUP by clicking on ENTER after being warned about porn ahead.
If the student got mouse trapped at 21CT site today, it could have happened when they tried to back out WITHOUT hitting enter.
How can you tell the difference. Even a techie would have a trouble
interpreting the logs on the two transactions, because the transactions are almost identical.
No technical solution or super sleuthing can take the place of being proactive and educating students
about these kinds of sites. If there are clear and specific steps on how to handle them these situations, it becomes much easier to manage monitoring.
Simple rule...
If your mouse is trapped and an inappropriate site that you accessed accidentally, call a teacher over immediately.
From there it is easy to put steps in place that vindicate the student and validate their proper behavior.
I'll try to follow this message up after seeing how our filters react to the two sites mentioned previously.
