Classroom Disconnect

We don't have a side splitting or tear jerking story to tell about Bess, but there is the familiar pattern of blocking and evidence that the bottom line is the bottom line.

One of our readers reported sending a message to the Classroom Connect mailing list asking for any good sites on ancient Egypt. A personal web page by a member of the Xoom community was highly recommended.  When the teacher went to check it out, she found it was blocked by Bess.

In a further disconnect, N2H2 received a LOT of heat when it was found out that they were selling aggregate data of student surfing habits to people who wanted to target students while they used the web in school.

One of the customers was the U.S. Department of Defense. They withdrew their purchase after the sales were made public and reporters began asking questions about why the Defense Department wants student surfing data.

Maybe that's not the only reason they withdrew their purchase. Our readers have reported that Bess also blocks the United States Marines and the CIA.  Hmmm....

Now with teachers constantly struggling to keep students on task, it's not surprising that they would be a "little" upset about paying a company to filter in a manner that doesn't make their jobs easier, have them collect information and sell it for a profit with the end result of making their jobs even more difficult.  That hardly makes Bess, man's best friend.
