We have to look at the ineffective and arbitrary blocking by Internet filters with different eyes. We don't see the damage that is being done. The map below is a small piece of a small piece of the much larger picture that came into focus last week. After I wrote about Archerlaw.com being blocked, Seth Finkelstein <http://www.sethf.com> found out that about 250 other sites shared the same IP and that they also might be blocked and they were. I then contacted the ISP and spoke with the owen. I was told that they don't host adult sites or questionable content and have strict rules about not doing so, because they are the ISP for schools, churches, synagogues, and the New Jersey Fraternal Order of Police. The map below was created by visiting the sites on the list supplied to me by Seth. It represents about 10% of the sites reported as blocked. It is just a small picture, because there were many sites that didn't have a physical street address, there were sites in other parts of the state, there were sites in PA and Jamaica, and there were parked domains. I am willing to bet that as we get more information and begin seeing a clearer picture of what is happening, the map you see below would stretch from coast to coast and be totally obscured by labels. If each blocked location was a pin hole, there would be more holes than map.
