Art is no new comer to technology, student-centered curriculum and authentic tasks. He established the state's first school sponsored electronic bulletin board program (BBS) in 1983 and the state's first laptop sign out program for students to access it. He created the state's first multimedia production elective in 1990 and served as an IBM Education Instructional Specialist . He also established CyberU, one of the web's first online tutorials for teachers in 1995. CyberU has been downloaded by hundreds of schools and distributed on more than a half-million ThinkQuest CDs. His school web site was also one of the first 500 schools in the world on the web. The student-centered approach is something he has believed in and practiced since starting teaching in 1968. Concerning his "lessons are where you find them" approach; he notes that the only thing that has really changed about his teaching style is a label others attached to it. Thirty years ago he was called a radical nut. Today he is called visionary. While Art has developed and taught dozens of different courses, the WebQuest process and the Big6 are two of his favorites. Art has worked with Tom March, co-creator of WebQuests since 1998 and is one of only 20 national trainers certified by Mike Eisenberg and Bob Berkowitz to conduct Big6 workshops. Beginning in the 2002-2003, Art will begin offering 3DWriting workshops that will allow teachers to seamlessly integrate hypertext narrative into existing writing programs. This will be accomplished in part through the introduction of 3DWriter software designed specifically for the process. Contact information: Art Wolinsky . |
