A Bridge to Achievement and Equity OERI's report "Technology's Role in Education Reform" places authentic challenging tasks (ACTs) at the core of education reform. The Online Internet Institute (OII) creates an environment for pursuit of such tasks, by using strategies that strengthen learners' abilities to communicate and collaborate . We use technology to form a bridge between higher achievement and equity. ACTs elevate the degree to which more students can achieve at higher levels. ACTs will be more complex than the traditional teaching of discrete skills. OII applies an array of technologies which serve as a wedge: to use our online infrastructure the way it is intended, teachers must practice their professional craft better, and at higher levels, in order to translate their experiences back to their classrooms. This go to the heart of the equity issue: every child's mind will be challenged, and every child will be provided with the tools to develop thinking skills, competencies and access to form the foundation to lead productive lives in the 21st century. We believe that educators can only guide students to reach such levels of achievement after they have experienced these new ways of learning themselves. Accordingly, our participants are accepted only after they have researched
and developed an essential question that relates to their own classroom practice and goals for their students, transforming professional development into its own Authentic Challenging Task. [ BACK ] |
