A Search for the Term 'chess' On August 27, 1995, I did a search for the word 'chess' at each of the four sites. In each case (except Yahoo), I asked for only 10 items to be returned. Even that has changed.
Back then, the speed of retrieval was tied to the number of hits you requested. Today the time it takes to return thousands of hits virtually is the same as returning ten. Today, instead of designating how many hits you want
retrieved, you designate how many you want displayed at one time. As you examine the results of the 1995 searches, you can visit each site and run the search again. It should be interesting to see if any of the same sites
are listed. You can also check out the links in the 1995 searches to see how many still exist on the web. It may give you a picture of the fluidity and changing nature of the net.
