Internet Before the Web

Today, when people talk about the Internet, many of then think that the Web is the Internet.  However, what most of people think of as the Internet didn't even exist prior to about 1992.  In this section we will take a look at what the Internet looked like before there were mice attached to computers and before there were pictures, sounds and multimedia.  Of course much of what existed in the past is still with us in the present.  It just may not look the same.

A Brief History of Internet

Telnet - Running programs on a remote computer

FTP - File Transfer Protocol - Moving files from here to there and visa versa

E-mail - Faster and more used than U.S. mail, but not as reliable

Listservs and Lists - A way to communicate with people with like interests via one to many e-mail

Netiquette - The unwritten code of conduct for Internet activities

Usenet - Much like Lists, but you go to the news postings instead of it coming to your mailbox

FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions are too often asked when they should be read first.

Gopher - The first "easy" way to locate information on the Internet

Internet Time Machine - Visiting the Library of Congress to see the net in the "good old days".

Putting the Pieces - A look at how someone might use all of this
