Making a Travelog

Making a bookmark is simple. When you visit a site, all you have to do is go to the bookmark menu and click on Add Bookmark. Editing an manipulating the bookmark may cause you some problems.

To edit bookmarks, you must bring up the bookmark window. You may do that in two ways. You may click on the Window menu and activate the Bookmark.

Once you do that, you have removed the Netscape general menu and have  activated the Bookmark menu. Almost every menu item now references the bookmarks. The exception is the File menu and the Window menu.

Let's practice creating and editing some bookmarks. Assume that you have been  given the task of finding out if the Ebola virus is a threat to this country. Follow the procedures below.

  • Clear all bookmarks from Netscape
    • Bring the bookmark window up by using the Window menu or Apple-B
    • Remove all of the items by highlighting them and using the Delete key, or go to the Edit menu and select Delete Bookmark.
    • Keep the Bookmark window open for the next step
  • Now we want to put in an entry that will tell what you plan to do this period.
    • Go to the Item menu and select Insert Bookmark
    • This will bring you to New Bookmark window where you have three boxes in which you may enter information. This bookmark will not take us anywhere. It will be used to supply information.
    • The Name box will contain something that looks like this...
      • Log entry - 02/15/96 - Ebola research
    • The Location (URL) box will be left blank because this bookmark is not being used to go to a site.
    • The description box may say something like this...
      • I will start by using InfoSeek. I will look for Ebola sites that may provide useful information, but I won't explore the sites carefully until later. I plan on searching and making quick visits.  I'll bookmark and note sites that may provide good information.
  • Next go to the Searchatorium, and do a search for information on Ebola.
    • Visit sites that look promising.
    • Bookmark any site you think will be helpful.
    • Edit each entry
      • You may want to change the Name to be more descriptive.
      • Don't change anything on the URL line.
      • The description box will not contain details, because you are not spending a lot of time at the site, but it should contain something. You may simply cut and paste something from the site itself.
  • End by inserting another bookmark that sums up what you have accomplished.

Here's a look at what this assignment might look like.
