packet
Before ARPANET data was sent as a single stream of information. Among other problems, data sent this way would clog the transmission lines in no time at  all. Another method of transferring information called "packet switching" was devised. Information is broken up into coded packages and sent out over the wires. Packets may take different routes and are assembled at their  destination. Understanding a little about packets gives you some insight into why there are delays when you are waiting for data to arrive at your computer.

ping
One way to check on an Internet connection is to  ping it. A simple piece of software (called ping) is used to send a series of ten short packages to a computer and reports on the time it takes each package to make a round trip. By examining the report you can determine if the computer is on  the net.  You can also determine if there is something slowing down the flow of data.

PPP
Point to Point Protocol is a method of sending information in graphical format across the Internet. SLIP is another, older  method of sending graphical information. You need a PPP or SLIP account in order to use a graphical web browser such as Netscape or MicroSoft Explorer.
