lists
Mailing lists, or lists are the way many people with similar interests exchange information and messages with one another. You may subscribe to over 65,000  publicly accessible mailing lists and it won't cost you a penny, unless you subscribe to the adage, "Time is money." In that case high volume lists that generate upwards of 100 messages a day can be "expensive."

listproc
When you subscribe to a list you often send a message to a computer rather than a person.  A listproc is one of about three different types of computers setup to manage mailing lists. Listserv and  majordomo are the other two types.

listserv
When you subscribe to a list you often send a message to a computer rather than a person.  A listserv (notice no "e" on the end) is one of about three  different types of computers setup to manage mailing lists. Listproc and majordomo are the other two types.

lurk
Lurk before you leap is good advice.  It means that you should simply follow conversations for a  while in order to get a feel for the culture and netiquette of a group. After you have lurked for a while you may start to post questions and responses to a discussioin areas, list or newsgroup.
