Hierarchical Bookmark Basics
Netscape 3.x

The ability to use, import, and export Netscape bookmarks is a very valuable tool. Learning effective use of bookmarks can cut your wasted time by hours and can lead to the development of very powerful personal research tools, but developing  these skill will take practice.

Now is as good a time as any to start. You have already been shown how to create, remove, annotate, import and export bookmarks. Today you are going to  learn how to create folders and organize your work. As you work you will move back and forth between Netscape and the Bookmark window. Be sure to arrange your desktop so that you can easily click on either document when you want to view it.

Instructions

MAKE A SCIENCE BOOKMARK

  • Go to the Bookmark editing window
  • Remove any bookmarks are currently in the bookmark window which don't relate to science.
  • Look at the name of the bookmark. If it is descriptive of the site, leave it as it. If it doesn't make sense, edit so that it is descriptive.
  • Go to the Description section and type in a good description that will help you use this site at a later date.
  • Go to Yahoo or any other search engine. Find an interesting site that deals with Science. Now create a few more science bookmarks.

MAKE A NEW FOLDER

  • In the Bookmark Editing window, go to the File menu and select New Folder
  • On the Name line, type SCIENCE (No description is necessary)
  • When you close the dialog box the new folder will be inserted. Note: If an item is highlighted, the new folder will be placed just below the highlighted item.
  • Now just drag and drop the science bookmarks into the science folder. All bookmarks and folders may be dragged and dropped, but be careful about dragging and dropping one folder into another.
  • If you did everything right, this should indent the bookmark under the folder and the text should look something like the picture below.

When a bookmark is indented under a folder it is attached to the folder. (Follow  the dotted lines.) When you drag the folder the bookmarks (or any other folders in it) come with it. Caution: When you delete a folder, all bookmarks in it are also deleted without warning you.

 MAKE ANOTHER FOLDER AND BOOKMARK

  • We are now going to INTENTIONALLY make a mistake and correct it.
  • Click on the Science folder to highlight it
  • Create a Folder and name it HISTORY
  • If you did everything WRONG as instructed, the folder will be inside the Science folder.
  • You can simply drag the History folder out of the Science folder and drop it in the space ABOVE the Science folder.  You may have noticed that you can't move it below the science folder, because the Science folder is the last one.
  • Now go to Yahoo or any other search engine, find an interesting History site, and create a bookmark.
  • Come back to the editing menu and drag the bookmark into the History folder if it isn't already there.
  • As you begin to accumulate folders you may Sort and View them a number of different ways from the View menu.
  • Your bookmarks should now look like this.

MAKE ONE MORE FOLDER AND BOOKMARK

  • Create a New Folder and name it ENGLISH
  • Go to Yahoo. or any other search engine and find an interesting English site and create a bookmark just as you did above.
  • Now do the dragging and dropping to make it look like this.
