Exporting Bookmarks

Exporting: Keeping Your Bookmarks Safe

If you share your computer, once you have created your bookmarks you want to keep them safe. Others can erase them or add to  them. Even if you don't share your computer, rule number one of the data handbook is always back up anything you want to keep.

Take a look at your bookmarks. If you don't have any, make a few quick ones that you can use for exporting  practice. Once you have a few bookmarks go to the bookmark editing window. Click on the File button. Select Save As... When prompted for a file name type, SUBJECTS.HTML or something similar. Be sure you are saving the files into  a folder where you want to keep your bookmarks.

Now that you have exported your bookmarks they are safe in your private file area. You will able to Import them and use them any time you wish. I guess it's time to let you know how to  retrieve them.

Let's assume last week you spent time locating science resources. You exported your bookmarks using the name SUBJECTS.HTML, and saved them on a floppy disk. It's now a week later and you would like to use those bookmarks. You  have two options.

1) Importingthe science bookmarks will result in the bookmarks being added toany bookmarks already under the bookmark editing menu option. If you don't want to add them to the current bookmarks  you can just delete the current bookmarks and then import. If you want to keep the current bookmarks for later use you must first save them using a unique name.

2) Opening the science bookmarks will result in the science bookmarks replacing any bookmarks under the bookmark menu option.

Import Bookmarks

  • Go to the Bookmarks menu and click on Edit Bookmarks.
  • Assuming that you have previously saved the bookmarks that are there, delete all of the bookmarks.
  • Go to the File menu on the Bookmark window and click on Import
  • Navigate to the folder where you previously saved the bookmarks and Open the file you saved as, SUBJECTS.HTML

If you want to bring in a fresh set of bookmarks, you can always export your current set using whatever name you choose, delete them from the window, and Import another set.

Important Note:  It's a good idea to create three or four different sets of practice bookmarks that you don't need.  Practice Exporting, Importing, and Opening them until you are comfortable with the differences.  This will help prevent lost bookmarks.
