Accountability
Comparative
Indicators of Education in the United States and Other G-8 Countries:
2002 shows how the U.S. education system compares to other major
industrialized countries (Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan,
Russian Federation, United Kingdom) in five areas: (1) the context
of education; (2) preprimary and primary education; (3) secondary
education; (4) higher education; and (5) education and the labor
force.
Practical Assessment, Research
and Evaluation (PARE) is an online journal published by the
ERIC Clearinghouse on Assessment and Evaluation (ERIC/AE) and the
Department of Measurement, Statistics, and Evaluation at the University
of Maryland, College Park. Its purpose is to provide education professionals
access to refereed articles that can have a positive impact on assessment,
research, evaluation, and teaching practice, especially at the local
education agency (LEA) level.

Hard Data: Examining Student Work
enGauge:
Data-Driven Decision Making and Accountability: What Does It Look
Like in Practice? Excerpt: More data does not necessarily translate
directly into better decisions. In fact, too much information can
be as much of a handicap as too little, if it is not used well.
Systematic use of data to improve teaching and learning requires
leadership, training, and the development of a culture of use. As
Mike Schmoker, author of "Results: The Key to Continuous Improvement"
(Schmoker, 1999), puts it, schools need to move away from "continually
adopting innovations" and instead "collectively focus
on goals and regularly measure the impact of the methods."
Looking At Student Work Excerpt:
Why look at student work? There are a range of purposes for looking
at student work. These purposes include: professional development;
accountability (determining the effectiveness of curriculum and
instruction); setting standards; and reflecting on student learning
and development. (currently collaborating on a new version of the
site)
Managing Student Performance Data
NCREL Toolbelt
The North Central Regional Educational Laboratory (NCREL) offers
information-gathering tools (ranging from checklists to surveys)
to help educators collect data about their classroom, school, district,
professional practice, or community. One new NCREL tool, SeeChange,
will allows users to display results graphically in order to visualize
trends and patterns.
